Game-changers / Category Makers: what doing good sh*t means to Heaps Normal co-founder Pete Brennan.

It's no surprise that these game-changing-category-making founders launched with a bang and have forged a new category in the beverage sector in their wake.

It's no surprise that these game-changing-category-making founders launched with a bang and have forged a new category in the beverage sector in their wake.

As outsiders looking in, you might put it down to the kind of perfect storm that entrepreneurs world-over look for but we're not alone in thinking their branding does a pretty darn good job of pulling you in before you've even tasted their non-alc bubbly elixir.

We've had their backs *literally because we make their tees* since day dot and while they were unofficial sponsors of our recent wedding, we know they've got ours.

Co-founder Pete Brennan, the brains behind the branding sat down and penned some thoughts to our questions of what Doing Good Sh*t means to him, read on for some gems.

What does sustainability mean to you and your business?

For us, it's just trying to do the right thing at every touch point of the business. The irony about doing the right thing from a sustainability perspective is that it's actually quite hard, and often more expensive, but the right thing to do is always the right thing to do. At Heaps Normal, we're really conscious about how operating our business affects the planet. Our merch is 100% recycled (thanks The Common Good Co!), we're part of 1% For The Planet, we have a 2% For People initiative, and we're currently working through our B-Corp application. From how we run the business on a macro perspective, to the smaller day to day decisions, we're always super conscious of our impact.

Three things you wished you knew before starting your business?

Nothing. I think the less you know about starting a business when starting a business, the better. If you knew how hard it is to start a business, I don't think anybody would start a business. There's something about the naivety of not realising how hard it is, that I think is almost like a superpower. Starting a business is hard, lonely, and riddled with sacrifice. There's never a good time to do anything, so start today and keep swinging until you land where you want to be.

When selecting apparel/merch/uniforms for your business why was it important to choose The Common Good Company?

We always look to surround ourselves with like-minded people. After we first met Ben and Tess we knew there would be a good synergy between us if we were to work together. The fact that sustainability plays such an important part in how The Common Good Company operate was the final piece of the puzzle that got our partnership over the line.

What does balance look like for you?

I have a strange relationship with balance. I prefer to be all in. For me, I think work/life integration is better than work/life balance. I believe that if you truly enjoy what you do for work then it doesn't actually feel like work.

What are your hopes for the future of your industry?

Our mission at Heaps Normal is to change drinking culture. For me, I look forward to it being normal to not feel obliged to drink alcohol at a social occasion. The non-alc category is booming at the moment, which is so exciting. There's more than enough of the pie to go around, so the more non-alc brands out there the better.

What’s next?

We're in the middle of building our own brewery at the moment, which is a huge project for our business. We're so excited to have a brand home where people can come and experience what Heaps Normal is all about.
